Your pain tolerance. If you cannot handle getting say a needle, getting a tattoo would be a very difficult undergoing. Tattoos can be extremely painful to some, while others have no problems getting them. If you have a very low pain tolerance, you may want a very small tattoo, or to talk to the artist beforehand so that if the pain becomes too much for you to handle, you'll be able to take a break, before they finish the tattoo.
Your line of work should also be a consideration. Some careers and jobs you cannot have tattoos, others they are seen as perfectly acceptable. Remember, you may change jobs or positions in the future, so take it into account before you get that tattoo.
Your own religion. Some religions have no issues with tattoos, others do. Know your own religion and whether or not it is appropriate before you do something you may regret immensely later.
Your personal health. Some health issues make it very risky for you to get tattoos. If you have problems with anemia or blood clotting, getting a tattoo could endanger your life. Make sure it is safe for you to get a tattoo before you get one.
Your lifestyle. If you go swimming a lot or are out in the sun, a tattoo may not be the best idea for you. Tattoos need proper time to heal and have aftercare before they are exposed to sunlight or chlorine. Make sure your lifestyle allows for that helping time beforehand.
The tattoo shop you'll be getting it done at. Make sure they are fully licensed and use proper care and hygiene with all the tools and especially the needles. You don't want to catch a disease just to save a couple dollars on that ink.
Getting a tattoo can be a great way to express yourself, but making sure it is the right thing for you is just as important. With a little thought and careful planning you can get a tattoo that works for you, and your life, and will be something you cherish for years to come.
